Won Kyu Hong et al. (2008) investigated the effect of Shang hwang mushroom (Phellinus linteus) grown in germinated brown rice for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD). An is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that is most common in children. A total of 35 patients group (2 to 14 years of age) with mild to moderate AD. They were treated with Phellinus linteus powder by oral, 6 – 12 g/day adjusted by the body weight for 12 weeks. The study tested itching and symptom severity using SCORAD index by two dermatologists and by patients or their parents. Immune protein (IgE) levels were checked in serum before and after the treatment.
The results showed that after 12 weeks, there was a significant reduction in symptom severity, 35 patients were decrease from 31.28±6 to 10.01 to 22.39±6 to 15.59. The mean pruritus decreased from 7.37±6 to 1.33. to 4.6±6 to 2.3, and the outcomes of the physician and patient clinical response assessments throughout the treatment period also improved.
The changes of serum IgE level were not significant, except transient aggravation of the skin lesion during early 4 weeks of the study. From the results, it was concluded that Shang hwang mushroom (Phellinus linteus) grown in germinated brown rice is a safe and good treatment for skin allergy in patients with mild to moderate symptoms.
